What Will Future Car Windows Look Like?

The transparency, color and thermal conductivity of vehicle glass will be regulated by artificial intelligence. Users will also be able to change the glass parameters using touch and voice control.

Drivers began to tint car windows during the WWII. Then they used ordinary spray paint. The paint was applied directly to the glass using a spray gun. Uneven coverage did not bother car owners as long as the method was new and unusual. When painted windows no longer surprise anyone, drivers began to experience aesthetic discomfort, constantly looking at the streaks and smudges.

In the ‘60s, car glass was no longer painted because the archaic method was replaced by film coating. The first films, although they allowed the tint to be evenly distributed over the entire area, quickly deformed and flaked off under the sunlight. Besides, those drivers who tinted the car with film coating did not have time to wipe the sweat from their foreheads. The film prevented heat exchange, and the interior turned into a kind of bath.

In the ‘90s, the drawbacks of film coatings and desire to hide what was happening inside the car from prying eyes led to the creation of metal films. The invention did not long please drivers with color and thermoregulation. The development of mobile communication and GPS technologies gave drivers a choice: beautiful windows or smooth operation of new devices. Metal films created interference and jammed the signal of phones and navigators.

Modern films based on organic compounds with carbon particles do not block communication means. In addition, they effectively protect against unsolicited UV rays that are harmful to the skin. What does the future hold for us? What other gimmicks will the developers come up with?

Apple has recently been granted a patent for “systems with adjustable windows”, in which new features of the new generation vehicle glass were described. The system is equipped with artificial intelligence that adjusts the tint, takes care of thermal conductivity and takes into account the preferences of the driver.

The Apple window consists of several glass layers made of polymers and other materials, including sapphire. The elemental composition of materials allows you to adjust their properties. The layers with variable parameters are sandwiched between two transparent sheets. Depending on the weather conditions and the user's preferences, the multi-layer windows adjust the tint, reflectivity and transparency. Drivers can change the properties of the «smart» glass by using touch or voice control. Under any circumstances, the windows will prevent UV rays from getting into the car interior.

By playing with the saturation and tint, drivers will be able to ensure privacy for themselves and passengers. It is useful when you need to urgently eat a huge burger in the car without feeling awkward from looking into the stretched mouth of a passerby, or to drive through a criminal district with a 60-inch TV in the backseat. The feature can also entertain people by using Augmented Reality. The temperature and humidity inside the car will not jump to unpleasant values thanks to the climate control system.

The ‘smart’ windows will eliminate the need to constantly move the sun visor back and forth. If the sunlight will blind the driver, the multilayer glass will immediately take on the role of sunglasses. Perhaps, the function will protect you from those car owners who rush towards you in the dead of night and do not turn off the high beam when approaching.
