CES 2020: the Top Car Technologies

Several technological innovations will be available very soon, the release of others is planned for the future, but some will remain concepts. Let's talk about the most promising ones.

CES 2020 once again introduces the latest technologies, including automotive ones. We have already told you about some of them, but we still have something to show you in this review.

Amazon Alexa integration

Both Lamborghini and Rivian announced Amazon Alexa integration for their cars at CES 2020. The smart digital assistant will actually take over the car controlling functions, just as Alexa manages the smart house system. Interestingly, these companies produce radically different cars: the Italian manufacturer produces supercars with ICEs, while the American startup designs electric SUVs.

Bosch Virtual Visor

It would seem that such a simple, even primitive thing as a sun visor can be upgraded and even become «smart». Bosch’s Virtual Visor uses a transparent LCD screen and in-car cameras to track a driver’s eyes and to carefully darken sections from the sunshine, while leaving up to 90% of the visor transparent.

BMW ZeroG Lounger seat

There is nothing more pleasant on a long road than a comfortable seat and BMW is going to equip its future cars with the next best thing in the world. The next generation of the innovative ZeroG seats is made of lightweight materials. The seats are equipped with a cocoon-like air bag that “wraps” a passenger in the event of a crash. New seat belts now move along with the new seats, which can recline up to 60 degrees and track a correct body position to prevent motion sickness. It is expected that the Zero G seats will appear in BMWs in the next few years. Flagship models will be the first to receive this option.

Continental and Sennheiser speakerless audio system

Sound is a wave, which means there is no need in sophisticated components for its transmission; almost any surface is suitable. Continental teamed up with the audio experts from Sennheiser to develop a new car audio system. Continental’s Ac2uated Sound system uses the internal car panels as resonators to create vibrations with the help of special actuators. The result is an extremely surround and clear sound. Continental says that without conventional speakers onboard, the car will lose some weight, what is a good advantage. However, it is unclear whether there is any interest on the part of automakers or not.

Byton in-car entertainment partnerships

Now more or less well-known car of the company is the Button M-Byte. The electric SUV officially debuted in production form at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. In Las Vegas, at CES 2020, the M-Byte greeted potential American customers and demonstrated its technology and «all-connectivity» for the first time. Partnership with services (Viacom CBS, Accuweather and Aiqudo) and a huge 48-inch screen significantly expand entertainment options of the car. The M-Byte’s systems are configured to work with 4G and 5G, not to mention the support of Android and iOS accessories, as well as services available on the corresponding platforms.

Sony Vision-S

The Sony Vision was created only as a platform for all the technological solutions that the company’s engineers are ready to produce for third-party automakers. The technological company itself is not going to produce electric cars, but it demonstrates a deep understanding of the topic. Apart from Sony’s specialists, such companies as NVIDIA, Bosch, ZF, Continental and Qualcomm worked on the Vision-S. Sony received the platform for the project from Magna Steyr.

Fisker Ocean

Today, every manufacturer with ambitions in the EV segment strives to give its product a unique design and to make it as technological, efficient and accessible as possible. The Fisker Ocean SUV has joined the ranks of such electric vehicles in Las Vegas. The car features «1600 kilometers of additional mileage per year», solar panels on the roof, jet acceleration dynamics, a 480-km drive range (for the basic version), the California convertible mode and many other features, along with an attractive price tag. All this should ensure the new Fisker success on the market. Full-scale production of the Ocean will start before the end of 2021, and the first customers will receive their cars no earlier than 2022.

Hyundai S-A1 Urban Air Mobility

Perhaps nothing is more related to the future than flying cars. Many well-known companies are working hard to bring this future closer and make it real. Among them is Hyundai, which is preparing to launch mass-produced flying taxis for Uber. The S-A1 prototype is a tiltrotor. It means that its propellers can change position and be used for vertical takeoff and landing, as well as for movement in the horizontal plane. The declared speed is 320 km/h. Hyundai and Uber will jointly develop the ground infrastructure. The two companies hope to launch the first commercial project in 2023.

Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR

CES 2020: the Top Car Technologies photo 9

In collaboration with the director of the extremely popular movie «Avatar» James Cameron, Daimler’s specialists tried to present a symbiotic car so close to nature that it is powered by an organic battery based on graphene. The Vision AVTR concept, unfortunately, will never come out, though it demonstrates how close reality has come to science fiction.
