15 Years Since the Bugatti Veyron Set the Speed Record

It has been15 years since the day of perhaps the most famous record in the automotive world of all time.

In late April 2005, just a month before the official start of mass production of the Bugatti Veyron, test pilot Uwe Novacki got into the car, turned the key and went to the starting line of the Ehre-Lessien track in Germany. At the end of the race, the figures «407 km/h» were added to the standings, which defined the Veyron as the fastest production car of its time.

All speed sensors at that time showed 427 km/h, but a lot of contradictions caused the figure to be lowered by 20 km/h. This did not play a big role, because even the speed that experts recognized as reliable was quite enough for Bugatti.

To accelerate a Bugatti is a very complex procedure. The «maximum speed» mode becomes available after turning the additional key located near the driver's seat. The Veyron will not reach a top speed if the pressure in at least one wheel does not match the installation. Besides, the supercar tests many other systems and only if everything is ready, the Bugatti begins to transform.

The ground clearance, which in the standard position is 125 mm, is reduced to 65 mm in front end and 70 mm in the rear end. The spoiler drops lower by changing its angle by 2 degrees. After that, the Veyron closes the air flaps of the diffuser. Now, in this position, the supercar is ready to brake all the records.

It took the Veyron just over 40 seconds to set this record. The result was achieved. Mr Piëch is happy. Bugatti, under the tutelage of the Volkswagen group, has forever made its name famous.
