The division will be responsible for supplying, selling and servicing Smart's cars in Europe. It will be headed by Dirk Adelman, who was responsible for transforming the former Smart into an EV brand. Martin Gunter, who previously worked in the financial department of after-sales services of Mercedes-Benz, is appointed as Finance Director.

The first model of the updated Smart brand will be released, as previously announced, in 2022. Daimler will be responsible for design of future production EVs, and Geely will be responsible for engineering and production.

In particular, this distribution of responsibilities resulted in the announcement of the sale of Mercedes-Benz’s factory in France, which produces the electric Smart EQ Fortwo. A mandatory condition of the deal is the continuation of the car production until 2022. The more practical Forfour will be produced at the factory in Slovenia.
