Acura Introduces the New TLX with the Powerful Type-S Modification

After some teasers, Acura pulled virtual silk sheets off the 2021 TLX, revealing an emotional sports sedan that reflects the brand's revived "Precision Crafted Performance" philosophy.

The 2021 Acura TLX is the company’s second sports model, which represents a four-door sedan with a special modification named Type-S.

The 2021 Acura TLX impresses with its refined new styling. The wheelbase was increased by 94 mm, the overall length – by 74 mm. According to TLX Global Development Leader Marc Ernst, the rear-biased design was one of the team's key conceptual goals, and it was important to achieve it without sacrificing interior or cargo space.

Acura's Diamond Pentagon grille — first introduced in the Precision concept — appears here, along with a pedestrian-detection radar plate surrounding the large Acura logo. While such obvious sensor placements are usually not recognized by motorists, this solution looks quite natural in the TLX.

‘Chicane’ front and rear LED lights resemble the Acura ARX-05 prototype racer, while the headlights look a bit simpler than that of the previous generation TLX. Sports features of the sedan are also visible in the body lines, which develop from the middle of the front doors and smoothly pass into the wide rear hips. A cool point is the non-standard placement of the door handles: the front ones are placed slightly lower than the line of the rear ones. In addition, the designers decided to lower the space under the license plate on the rear bumper, thus freeing up space for the massive Acura logo on the trunk lid.

Now, let’s speak about the most interesting part. This generation car has acquired the Type-S modification, which was not used for the brand’s passenger cars for about 10 years. According to the classic construction of hot models, all the chrome plated decorations were replaced by glossy black elements. The black grille also differs from the standard versions. The adjustments were made in favor of a larger air flow to cool the most interesting element – the new crazy engine, but more on it later. Large air intakes in the front bumper, by the way, perform the same function.

All this intimidating design ends with a glossy front splitter in front, as well as a cool spoiler and diffuser in the back. The latter, by the way, will be available in carbon fiber version made for real fans of sports style. The final touches in this entire look were two types of 20-inch wheels: standard 10-spoke wheels and forged Y-shaped ones in the NSX style.

New engines give an indescribable sense of delight. Let’s start with small: the current standard version is based on a 2.0-liter turbo engine (272 hp / 380 Nm), which is derived from the RDX SUV. The engine is really good and will easily compete with the previous naturally aspirated version – a 3.5-liter V6.

Finally, we got to the most interesting unit – the soul of the sportiest TLX Type-S. This sedan is equipped with Acura’s latest 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The company promises a 50% increase in low-end twist and incredible gains in peak power output compared to the current TLX’s 290-hp naturally aspirated unit. What are the numbers, you ask? Don't be shocked to see 380 hp and 475 Nm.

Both engines come with a 10-speed automatic transmission, but it is slightly retooled specifically for the Type-S so that it can withstand such power. As for the drivetrain, the TLX Type S is equipped with Acura's proprietary SH-AWD that can be ordered optionally for the 2.0-liter TLX variant.

Acura decided not to overthink the interior look, having taken the design language of the RDX but with a new central stack and Acura’s 10.2-inch infotainment display controlled through touchpad interface. Volume and seek buttons have also been relocated for easier use. A high center console separates the driver and front passenger, giving the interior a cozy atmosphere without sacrificing interior space.
