Alfa Romeo to Release an Electric Compact SUV by 2022

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), as you know, is not particularly in a hurry to produce electric vehicles.

All the conglomerate's efforts in this direction are currently limited to two models: the Chrysler Pacifica (a plug-in hybrid capable of driving about 35 km on a battery) and the Fiat 500e, which should soon receive an upgrade. However, other FCA brands — Dodge, Jeep and Maserati — continue to tease with promises and plans that will take a long time to implement. Now, Alfa Romeo has joined them. The Italian premium sports car brand has promised to release a hybrid SUV next year, and an all-electric compact SUV is due to be released in 2022 to compete with the Tesla Model Y and other models already available on the market.

Earlier this week, Autocar reported that Alfa Romeo was preparing its first all-electric car and it will be a «compact SUV», which is smaller than the Volvo XC40 and roughly corresponds to the BMW X1.

Unfortunately, there is no more information other than confirming plans and deadlines. Alfa Romeo did not even mention the name of the new model. However, it is worth noting that the release of this as yet unnamed compact electric SUV will be preceded by a hybrid mid-size Tonale (the concept car was presented at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show). The Tonale, which was built on the SMR platform and was made in the style of the Jeep Compass and Renegade, will probably be able to travel 50 km only on electric charge.

If Alfa Romeo keeps its promise, it will have two plug-in SUVs by 2022.

In October 2019, FCA announced the construction of a new battery assembly facility in Turin as part of an overall strategy to electrify the model range. The new «Battery Hub» will be part of the Mirafiori production complex.
