The Audi A8 Runs Only on Petrol: What Is the Reason

The German brand has changed its mind about converting the flagship Audi A8 sedan to electric traction.

The Audi A8 will not become a full-fledged electric car, as it was promised earlier. The unpopularity of sedans forced Audi to abandon this idea. This was reported by Automotive News Europe with reference to a member of the Board for Technical Development, Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler.

The reason for this was the increasing popularity of SUVs and CUVs and, as a result, a drop in demand for models in other bodies, including sedans. The brand's management decided to focus on electric SUVs and CUVs, such as the e-tron and e-tron Sportback. Meanwhile, the A8 will become a plug-in hybrid with an improved powertrain.

In 2019, the sedan already had an electric variant, the A8 60 TFSIe. This model is equipped with a 3-liter V6 petrol engine, an electric motor and a 14.1-kWh battery pack. The total output plant is 450 hp and 700 Nm. In pure electric mode, the hybrid can travel just 40 km (WLTP). The new hybrid system will allow driving with the ICE off for more than 47 km. According to Rothenpieler, this is enough for citizens to travel to work daily with charging in the parking lot during the day.
