If Volkswagen Gives the Green Light: Audi Intends to Beat Lamborghini

The European Patent Office (EPO) has registered Audi’s new trademark – ‘R8 Green Hell’.

The new trademark ‘R8 Green Hell’ may indicate that Audi is on a highway to ‘Green Hell’. ‘Green Hell’ is one of the race tracks in Nurburgring. It is famous for its difficult sections. A record set there is a matter of prestige for automakers trying to beat their competitors.

Perhaps, Audi thought that the current record holder Lamborghini Aventador SVJ was standing too long on a pedestal. In the summer of 2018, the 770-hp Italian supercar, having set a record of 6 minutes 44.97 seconds on ‘the Northern loop’, became the champion of the Nordschleife. However, the Volkswagen group, which includes the two companies, can interfere with Audi’s plans. The parent company can prohibit ‘confrontation’ between its own brands.

About two years ago, Managing Director of Audi Sport Oliver Hoffman said in his interview that he had «some good ideas for a more extreme R8». Perhaps, when speaking about a road car inspired by the R8 GT3, he was referring specifically to the R8 Green Hell. In this case, it is about a slightly «thinner» mid-engine supercar with a more powerful 5.2-liter FSI engine. The Audi R8 V10 Performance with such a unit produces 620 hp and 580 Nm, the Lamborghini Huracan Evo — 640 hp and 600 Nm. It is assumed that Audi’s new flagship model’s power output may be increased just to the Huracan’s level.

According to the second version, the new name was registered for the limited model in the style of the R8 Selection 24h or R8 V10 Plus Neuberg. In this case, the sports car will differ from the standard model only in design. The third and most boring version is that the company has no specific plans to use «R8 Green Hell» and this is just a long-term prospect.
