Bentley Postpones the Release of Its Electric Vehicle: What Is the Reason

The British brand decided to wait for cheaper batteries.

Despite an ambitious plan to electrify the entire model line in 2023, Bentley is in no hurry to release its first EV. The first all-electric model of the British brand will not debut until 2025, according to Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark.

Hallmark believes that batteries should become better and more accessible, what can happen in 4-5 years.

We will launch our first battery electric vehicle in the middle of the 2020s because we anticipate in five years the increase in power density – or the introduction of solid state batteries – will allow a 30 percent-plus improvement in performance.

Hallmark said.

Today, batteries are six times more expensive than engines, which account for 20% of the cost of a car. This determines the cost of EVs. Most potential buyers simply cannot afford such a car. According to Hallmark, by 2025, when the new generation of batteries will be introduced, Bentley will be able to build «the right electric vehicle». By this, he means the desired wheelbase, size, shape and number of passenger seats.

The CEO also hinted at Bentley’s first EV. It can be an electrified version of the classic Bentley model from Mulliner.
