Production of the BMW i8 started about six years ago. In December 2019, a 20-thousandth sports car (both coupes and roadsters) was assembled at the factory in Leipzig. BMW declared the i8 to be the best-selling sports car with an electrified powertrain. At the same time, it is worth considering that these vehicles are almost the most expensive in BMW’s line-up. The i8 Coupe costs starting from $147,500, and the i8 Roadster — from $163,300. The full-size luxury M760i xDrive with a powerful V12 engine costs about the same – $157,700, while the i8 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo I3.

Listing the “titles” of the BMW i8 in a farewell press release, the Bavarians called the model their first rechargeable hybrid and first production car with laser headlights. In addition, the BMW i8 was the first to receive a turbo I3, which became the «engine of the year» five times in its category.

Released in 2014, the production sports car was equipped with a 1.5-liter 231-hp turbo I3 and a 131-hp electric motor. A total output of the powertrain was 357 hp and 420 Nm. The 2018 i8 came with a turbo I3 and a 143-hp electric motor. A total power output of the units was increased to 374 hp, but torque remained the same – 420 Nm. At the same time, a battery capacity increased from 7.1 kWh to 11.6 kWh. A 0-100 km/h time was 4.4 seconds, but a drive range of 55 km (NEDC) was too small for a model with such an impressive price tag.
