BMW: Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars to Cost as Petrol Cars Soon

Along with pure EVs, BMW also relies on hydrogen fuel cell cars.

According to Vice-President Jürgen Guldner, such vehicles are expensive to produce so far, but the company is confident that their cost will soon fall significantly.

According to Guldner, fuel-cell cars can become as cheap as vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines within the next 5 years. This will be facilitated by the fact that their production will minimize the use of such an expensive component as platinum (it acts as a catalyst for a chemical reaction). BMW should show the corresponding changes on the example of its third-generation hydrogen powertrain, which is currently in development.

We are already starting to work on the third generation [of the hydrogen powertrain] with the explicit goal of reducing the cost to a level that will allow us to enter the market. This [price parity] will happen in 2025. If you look at the plans published by Japan, Korea and other countries, they all define the period between 2025 and 2035 as a window of opportunity to equalize costs [for hydrogen vehicles] in relation to traditional technologies,

Jürgen Guldner said.

BMW has been working with hydrogen technologies since 2015. The company cooperates with Toyota, which, by the way, already has the production hydrogen Mirai in its portfolio (the second generation of this model will soon be released). However, BMW's first production fuel-cell car should appear in 2022 – it will be a hydrogen version of the X5 SUV. Last year, the company introduced the X5 FCEV concept, which is currently being tested on public roads. As BMW’s top manager noted, hydrogen prototypes drive 402-480 km on one tank, but their drive range will be increased to 560 km soon. At the same time, the hydrogen X6 and X7 will be out after the release of the X5 FCEV.
