BMW Is Preparing a 368-HP Hydrogen Fuel Cell X5

The new Hydrogen NEXT powertrain will be installed in the BMW X5 SUV in 2022.

Along with other car manufacturers, BMW started working on creating a hydrogen fuel cell car a few years ago. The project is called ‘Hydrogen’ and is being implemented in collaboration with Toyota. During this time, BMW improved the resulting hydrogen powertrain several times. Recently, its new version, known as the Hydrogen NEXT, has been introduced.

The powertrain consists of a fifth-generation eDrive unit, fuel cell stacks, a converter and a pair of 700-bar tanks with 6 kg of hydrogen, which are located in vehicle underbody.

The total power output of the i Hydrogen NEXT reaches 368 hp, which demonstrates the excellent performance and competitiveness of the hydrogen technology. The new powertrain will be installed in the BMW X5 in 2022. First, a trial batch will be released. Then, BMW intends to establish mass production of the model by 2025.
