Sri Lanka Gets Its Own Car Manufacturer and the First Electric Supercar

Sri Lanka-based Vega Innovations is even planning to present its coupe to the European public in Geneva.

The island country of Sri Lanka is the birthplace of fragrant Ceylon tea. Tea plantations, picturesque beaches, Buddhist temples and elephants are the only island’s sightseeing. But things may change soon.

Vega Innovations plans to present its debut project at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. The company is going to present an all-wheel drive EVX electric supercar which features a lithium-iron-phosphate battery and a drive range of 240 km without recharging.

In 2015, the company announced its work on a supercar with a 900-hp electric powertrain. Now the company claims more conservative figures: the supercar has received two electric engines with a peak output of 300 kW (408 hp and 720 Nm), which are powered by a liquid-cooled lithium-iron-phosphate battery with an energy storage density of 220 watt-hours per liter (the total capacity is unknown). The designers claim that the car accelerates from 0-100 km in 4 seconds and has a drive range of 240 km.

Among the innovative solutions are extremely complex algorithms for controlling the powertrain, a unique layout of battery cells, power and software control systems. In addition, the Vega EVX will receive a semi-autonomous driving system with lane control, marking and pedestrian recognition.
