Charging EV Becomes More Expensive Than Filling Full Tank of Gasoline

The largest European network of electric charging stations Ionity has changed the original terms of payment for recharging electric vehicles.

Starting from January 31, 2020, Ionity, which owns 200 charging stations in Europe, changes the terms of payment for using its services. From the end of January, the network, which was founded by BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen and Ford, will charge not for a charging session but for the electricity used. If one recharging session has cost €8 so far, the new terms will take into account how much electricity an electric vehicle will “use”.

For example, if now you need to pay only €8 to fully charge a 62-kWh battery of a new Nissan Leaf, then you will have to pay €0.79/kWh starting from January 31, which will total about €50. This should be enough for a 385-km drive range (according to the official data of the manufacturer).

In Germany, you can buy about 35 liters of gasoline for the same €50 and fill a full tank of a Golf VII 1.4 TSI. This will be enough to drive for more than 600 km on the highway (again, according to the official data from the manufacturer).

Ionity warns that there are benefits and discounts for some EV owners, but they are unlikely to cover such a dramatic difference in a drive range.

The article is intended for people who do not have an electric car and, probably, they don’t understand what’s what. Firstly, why say that charging a full battery on a new Nissan Leaf is more expensive than a full tank on a Golf (it’s about 35 liters)? Secondly, electric cars do not come on an empty battery to charge... Well, and the last, no one holds an electric car to charge it constantly at such stations. At such stations, cars only recharge on some infrequent long journeys. A constant charge occurs at home at a rate of about 30 cents per kilowatt. Based on these data, this is approximately € 19 (385 km referred to in the article for Nissan Leaf), in terms of gasoline - this is 13 liters, on which the Golf will travel a little more than 200 km. In addition, I have not even remembered the cost of taxation for cars with ICE compared to electric cars, and a number of benefits for electric cars.
