Copies of Jeep Wrangler Cost Six Times Cheaper than Original

An Indian copy of the Jeep Wrangler is much more affordable than the original model.

India-based Mahindra has revealed a price list and has announced the start of sales of its new body-on-frame Thar, a local copy of the Jeep Wrangler. The all-terrain vehicle is six times cheaper than the original: prices for the Mahindra Thar start from 980,000 rupees, while the four-door Jeep Wrangler in India costs from 6,394,000 rupees.

Mahindra’s new all-terrain vehicle is similar to the Wrangler conceptually and externally, but the Thar has nothing in common with the Jeep model technically. The Indian “clone” is slightly more compact (its length is only 3,985 mm). The model is produced exclusively with a two-door body and can be equipped with a diesel engine, while the Wrangler is available only with a petrol engine in India.

The SUVs have a lot in common: a body-on-frame structure, removable doors and roof, hard-wired four-wheel drive with a downshift, as well as excellent geometric cross-country ability. The Mahindra Thar has an independent two-lever front suspension and a standard rear differential lock. In India, the model is offered in thirteen versions and two trim levels.

The Indian SUV in the AX version is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission produced by Mahindra. The standard Thar with a 2.0-liter 150-hp (320 Nm) petrol engine, steel 16-inch wheels, powered windows, two airbags, air conditioning, a cloth top and a six-seat interior with rear-mounted “army” benches will cost 980,000 rupees. Modifications with a 2.2-liter 130-hp (300 Nm) diesel engine cost from 1,085,000 rupees.

The richly equipped LX SUVs have a four-seat interior, a hard roof, a 7-inch touch infotainment system, a multi-steering wheel, an on-board computer, tire pressure sensors, LED headlights, eight-band powered front seats, cruise control and 18-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the Thar LX can be ordered with a 6-speed automatic gearbox by Punch.

Prices for the Mahindra Thar LX range from 1,249,000 rupees for the version with a hard top, a petrol engine and a manual transmission to 1,365,000 rupees for the richly equipped SUV with a diesel unit, an automatic gearbox and a folding roof.

Deliveries of the second-generation Mahindra Thar will begin on November 1. There is no doubt that the SUV will become a bestseller in India because competitors of the model are much more expensive. Export deliveries of the new Mahindra Thar are not excluded. The “clone” of the Wrangler may appear even in the homeland of the original model, in the United States.
