The Audi e-tron Receives a Third Engine

The Audi e-tron and coupe-like Audi e-tron Sportback have simultaneously received a three-engined S-modification.

The Audi e-tron 55 quattro with two electric motors was introduced in the summer of 2018. A year later, a new version of the SUV was announced — the e-tron 50 quattro. Both were twin-engined and differed only in power units and battery, although the 2015 e-tron quattro concept had three motors. Audi decided to correct the situation only a year and a half later, releasing simultaneously three-engined versions of the standard e-tron and the coupe-like e-tron Sportback.

An asynchronous electric motor, which drives the rear wheels of the e-tron 55 quattro, is installed on the front axle. The rear axle is equipped with two units producing a total power output of 267 hp. A combined output of the three-engined powertrain is 435 hp and 808 Nm. In boost mode, the output increases to 503 hp and 973 Nm for 8 seconds. A 0-100 km/h time is 4.5 seconds in comparison with the e-tron and e-tron Sportback 55 quattro’s 5.7 seconds. A top speed limit is increased to 210 km/h (+10 km/h).

The battery of the S-versions has a capacity of 95 kWh, of which 86.5 kWh are actually consumed. There is no data on a drive range. By default, the S models have only a rear-wheel drive system, which is connected when there is not enough power.

The three-engined modifications differ in a different front bumper with increased air intakes, a more prominent rear diffuser and expanded 23-mm wheel arches. Standard 20-inch wheels will be replaced with 22-inch one for a surcharge. A standard adaptive air suspension can change the ground clearance by 76 mm depending on the driving mode.

Only in-cabin nameplates indicate that the car belongs to the S-series. Sports seats with electric controls are standard. Seats with improved side support or heated seats with perforated leather trim are available for a fee.
