GMC Hummer EV: 3 Motors, 18 Cameras and CrabWalk

A rival to the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck has been introduced.

General Motors (GM) and GMC have introduced the revived Hummer. However, it is only half resurrected, because now it is not an independent brand but a separate model. The iconic nameplate now means an electric pickup truck with a three-engine powertrain and unique features like a full-control chassis with the CrabWalk function and 18 omnidirectional cameras.

At the beginning of the year, it became known that the GMC Hummer EV would be built on a new modular platform with a fully independent suspension and Ultium batteries, the chemical composition of which had been developed jointly with LG Chem. This battery contains less expensive cobalt and consists of 24 separate modules.

The capacity is not disclosed. But it is known that the battery operates under 800 volts and supports direct current charging with a capacity of up to 350 kilowatts. By connecting to such a charging station, you can get additional 160-km in 10 minutes. The battery is sealed and covered with steel sheets, so the Hummer EV can climb 45-cm ledges and cross fords more than 600 mm deep.

The three-engine e4WD powertrain with Ultium Drive is battery-powered. The most powerful version of it produces 1,014 hp and 15,590 Nm. Such a pickup truck accelerates to 60 mph (97 km/h) in about 3 seconds and travels more than 560 km without charging. There will be simpler versions, but they will be released in several years.

The new Hummer is a four-door pickup with a five-seat interior and a removable roof. If necessary, the transparent panels can be hidden in the front trunk, turning the car into a convertible. An adaptive air suspension with Extract Mode is also available (in fact, it will work after the software update in 2022). With its help, the Hummer rises by additional 149 mm. A full-control chassis with the CrabWalk function, when all four wheels turn in one direction and the pickup can move diagonally like a crab, will also be released.

But that is not all. The new Hummer features the UltraVision system. It consists of 18 cameras, including two installed under the bottom, allowing you to pre-evaluate the terrain under the wheels or the complexity of the obstacles to overcome. Plus, you can use “off-road widgets” via an infotainment system and a digital dashboard: wheel torque values, tilt angles, differential lock levels, and tire grip limits.

The first to enter the market is the most expensive and powerful modification — the GMC Hummer EV Edition One. This pickup will receive premium interior trim, the latest Super Cruise, a MultiPro cargo platform door with six positions, a powered rear window, and 18-inch wheels shod in Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires (35 inches). The Hummer EV Edition 1 will be produced at the Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center in the fall of 2021. This SUV will cost $112,595.

The Hummer H3 will be released at $99,995 in the fall of 2022. It will also have three electric motors, but their less powerful (811 hp and a 480-km drive range). The 89,995-dollar two-engined Hummer EV 2 X (634 hp) will be launched in the spring of 2023. Finally, the standard Hummer H2 with two engines, a conventional suspension and a 400-km drive range will debut in the spring of 2024.

The GMC's competitors are the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertrack, Bollinger B2, Ford F-150 EV and Lordstown Endurance. The latter, however, is focused on the needs of companies, working not with private clients but with special equipment and commercial vehicles.
