Google Cars Travel All Over the World

Street View first appeared in Google Maps in 2007. Google Maps now covers the parts of the world where 98% of people live.

Google reports that, by combining all of the available images together, you can get a distance that would amount to circling the Earth more than 400 times.

Cars equipped with omnidirectional cameras are used to collect 360-degree photos. Other means of transportation, including boats, are used in hard-to-reach places where cars can't pass. Also, to get the imagery, Google uses backpacks called «trekkers» worn by hikers. What is really surprising is that trackers can even be strapped to animals – sheep, camels, horses and others.

All imagery is collected in a holistic material; it is compared with satellite photos and ground mapping to create complete and detailed maps. Google Maps together with Google Earth covers the parts of the world where 98% of people live.

It became known that 11 million fake addresses were found in Google Maps in July this year. They were created by commercial companies to increase search results. Moderators conduct regular checks and cleanings in Google Maps.
