There was a rush of demand for new passenger cars in the EU countries in December last year. The growth is 21.7% in comparison with the same period in 2018. This is the best indicator of December in the last decade. It also marked the fourth consecutive month of steady sales growth.

Residents of France (+27.7%), Sweden (+109.3%) and the Netherlands (+113.9%) were the most active buyers. The ACEA attributes this to changes in the taxation of ICE cars and EVs. As a result, all EU countries, including the five main markets, showed strong sales growth in December.

In total, more than 15 million new passenger cars were purchased in the European Union in 2019, which is 1.2% more than a year earlier. In the main European markets, the highest consumer activity was demonstrated by residents of Germany (+5%), France (+1.9%) and Italy (+0.3%). But Spain and the UK showed negative dynamics again – 4.8% and 2.4%, respectively.
