Land Rover Tests the 5-Liter Defender

Photos of the Defender with an eight-cylinder engine has leaked on the Internet.

At first glance, the SUV in the photos published by Autocar is no different from the usual one. The only visible differences are the Prototype Vehicle sticker and the unusual configuration of the exhaust pipes. Jaguar Land Rover uses a quad exhaust system only in models with a V8 engine.

It was these details that attracted the attention of British journalists. After checking the registration data of the car, they have found out that the prototype is equipped with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine. This unit is equipped in the Range Rover Sport SVR and Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography. The V8-powered Range Rover Sport SVR produces 575 hp, but the Defender’s power output will be limited to about 500 hp.

The problem is that the mass production of the unit at Ford’s factory in Bridgend will be finished by the end of this year. The company intends to shut down the facility. In this light, it becomes relevant to assume that the most powerful Defender can get an engine from BMW – a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which the company installs in the most powerful M cars.

Although the use of BMW’s engine has not yet been officially confirmed by JLR, Autocar believes that this is just a formality.
