Lotus Lambda: New Details About Rival of Tesla Model X

The Lotus Lambda will be released in 2022.

We continue getting more and more details about the Lambda crossover, with which Geely-owned Lotus hopes to break out into the leaders of the luxury segment and compete with Tesla. The new model will be released only with an electric powertrain and not with a hybrid one, as previously reported.

The Lambda will be available in two versions: the standard crossover will receive two electric motors, a total output of which will be about 600 hp. The top-end version will produce 750 hp. Dynamic specifications are still unknown, but it is expected that it will be able to compete with the Tesla Model X due to the light body. It is worth noting that the Model X Performance accelerates from 0-97 km/h in 2.6 seconds.

The crossover has an all-electric range of at least 360 miles (about 580 km). For comparison, the drive range of the Model X in the longest-range version is almost 600 km, but the powerful Performance version needs to be recharged after 480 km.

The Lotus crossover project was born in 2016. Then, it was planned to equip the model with a petrol-electric powertrain borrowed from Polestar or Volvo, which are also part of Geely. However, with the growing popularity of electric vehicles, the British company changed their plans and decided to stop at “green” engines.

The crossover will be based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which is used for the Volvo XC90, XC60 and Polestar 1. The model will be similar in size to the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE: it will be 4.9 m long, about 2 m wide and 1.6 m high.

According to Geely's plans, the Lambda should become the best-selling Lotus model. Within a few years, the company is going to increase sales from 1,500 to 5,000 cars a year, making China and the United States the main markets. It is expected that a significant share of sales will fall on the new Esprit hybrid equipped with V6, which will be released in 2021.

Earlier, it was reported that the Lotus Lambda will be assembled at the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group factory in Wuhan (China), which is capable of producing up to 150,000 cars annually. According to new information, the first batch of the Lambda can be manufactured at the Lotus factory in Hethel (UK), which was founded in 1952 and has a production capacity of up to 10,000 cars per year.
