Mercedes-Benz to Create Separate Sub-Brand for G-Class

The decision is due to the high demand for the SUV.

Mercedes-Benz has announced the creation of a new sub-brand under the letter G, which will be the fourth for the Stuttgart brand after AMG, Maybach and EQ. The company plans to produce both the standard SUV and its numerous modifications under the new brand created specifically for the G-Class.

According to AutoHome with reference to Mercedes-Benz’s statement, the company's production capacity does not keep up with the demand for the G-Class today. Last year, almost 35,000 G-Class models were sold worldwide. Due to the popularity of the SUV in China, it was necessary to release an additional low-cost version of the G 350 with a 258-hp supercharged V4. Mercedes-Benz is likely to further expand the G-Class family as part of the separate brand.

At the same time, Mercedes-Benz said that the legendary SUV was waiting for “development and electrification”. According to media reports, the fuel version of the G-Class may leave the pipeline in 2023, and the next-generation model will be fully electric. In this case, the model will join the EQ line-up, which already features the EQV based on the V-Class and the EQC that has the top-end EQC 4x42 version designed specifically for off-road driving.
