Mercedes Installs a 1.5-Liter Engine on the CLS for China

The four-door Mercedes-Benz CLS is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine exclusively for the Chinese market.

In the USA, the standard Mercedes CLS – the CLS 450 — is equipped with a 3.0-liter 362-hp in-line six turbo engine. The CLS 220d with a 2.0-liter 191-hp four-cylinder turbo diesel engine is a standard model in the brands’ domestic market.

In China, the standard CLS 260 sedan features a 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing 185 hp and 280 Nm. The ICE is supported by the EQ Boost starter generator, adding another 14 hp and 150 Nm. The model has a 9-speed automatic transmission and a RWD drivetrain only. A 0-100 km/h time is 8.7 seconds.

As reported, the CLS 260 will remain exclusive to the Chinese market and will only be available in the long-wheelbase version.

The reason for its release is the specifics of taxation. Engines with a volume more than 1.5 liters are subject to a higher tax rate in China. In addition, the CLS 260 costs $10,000 less than the CLS 300. This will attract more customers.

The trend towards downsizing may also affect the European line-up of Mercedes-Benz. Rumor has it that the next generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with an electric motor instead of the usual 4.0-liter V8.
