General Motors intends to significantly increase production in the next few years. These plans will be implemented not by increasing production of existing models but by expanding the company’s EV line-up. The manufacturer has already drawn up an electrification program for the next decade. According to it, the annual production of electric vehicles will exceed 1 million units.

To implement such a large-scale plan, GM has developed a new extremely flexible platform for electric cars and the innovative ‘Ultium’ battery system. Such batteries contain a high percentage of nickel and a low percentage of cobalt, what will reduce the size of the cell and the amount of wiring used. A capacity of ‘Ultium’ batteries varies from 50-200 kWh. This will provide a drive range of up to 650 km. Another unique feature of the batteries is that they can be installed inside the battery pack both horizontally and vertically. This allows the company's engineers to design future electric vehicles with flat floors and expand the interior space.

As for the flexible platform, it allows building everything from cars to trucks. Such vehicles can be both front-wheel drive and rear- or all-wheel drive. The platform includes a powertrain also developed by GM. This will help the company to significantly reduce costs and increase profitability.

The first model based on this platform will be the revived, electric Hummer. Next, it will be followed by the Cadillac Lyriq SUV.
