MINI Shows MPV with One Door and Lifting Windshield

The show car has received an electric powertrain and a full-fledged autopilot.

As part of the NEXTGen conference, MINI has revealed details about the new Urbanaut: an electric one-box drone with a futuristic design. The Urbanaut has received only one door and a lifting windshield that serves as a window pane. If desired, the interior of the minivan can be used for certain needs: driving, recreation or socializing.

The Urbanaut demonstrates how MINI's design is evolving. For example, new headlights are located under a slotted aluminum radiator grille structure and can only be seen when they are turned on.

The headlights themselves are multi-color and can show different images: the graphics change when the autopilot is activated. Taillights with a matrix design work on the same principle and are placed under lattice aluminum plates.

Another feature of the Urbanaut is transparent wheels that are illuminated from the inside. They change their appearance depending on the driving mode. A fake radiator grille has the shape of an octahedron and serves as a panel for autonomous driving systems: sensors and lidars are hidden under it.

In total, there are three driving modes: Wanderlust (the only one in which the driver can take part in driving), Vibe (for communication with the company) and Chill (for recreation). Wanderlust mode is activated by touching the MINI logo, after which the interior is transformed: pedals, a steering wheel and a fascia panel extend. When you turn on the autonomous driving mode, the steering wheel and pedals are removed.

When Vibe is activated, a sliding side door opens, a windshield becomes a window pane, and a central screen becomes an infotainment control center. In Chill mode, you can change the position of the backseat and turn the central tablet into a table lamp.

The Urbanaut is just a concept that is unlikely to ever become mass-produced. Probably for this reason, the company does not go into specifications and an electric powertrain.
