New Electric Car: Kia Decides the Fate of Its Sports Car

The manufacturer has not yet decided what to do with the Kia Stinger. An electric variant seems to be a realistic scenario.

Kia will present an updated version of the Stinger very soon. It is expected that the liftback will get a different front fascia and a full-tech interior, as well as a modified 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

It would seem that all this looks rosy, if not for one «but». This update may be the first and last in the biography of the extravagant liftback due to meager sales that Kia is not happy with. They decreased by 18% at the end of 2019 and by another 21% in the first quarter of 2020.

March was not successful for the company at all: sales of the Kia Stinger fell immediately by 40%. There is a possibility that the manufacturer will decide to abandon the non-profitable model altogether. Moreover, the current situation due to the pandemic forces many car manufacturers to save money. However, there is another option — the complete opposite of this. Kia can change the concept of the Stinger by making it an electric car.

This is the conclusion reached by Top Gear. Head of Kia Design Center Karim Habib said in his interview with the British journalists that the increasing popularity of electric cars forces manufacturers to transform their car line-ups with this factor in mind. At the same time, the designer did not say anything specifically about the Stinger. The company has at least three more years before the end of the current model's life cycle to make a final decision.
