New Volkswagen Passat to Be Electric

The Volkswagen Passat EV will be released in 2023.

Volkswagen gave the green light to the next-generation Passat. The discussion concerning the sedan and station wagon lasted more than a year. The model owes its continued existence to VW CEO Herbert Diess.

It was he who insisted on the release of the new VW Passat, explaining his decision to the growing popularity of the VW Arteon with similar dimensions. Besides, the CEO noted that the abandonment of the Passat was irrational, especially with the release of the production ID Vizzion in the sedan and wagon bodies in 2023.

It is known that the «ninth» Passat will share a platform and powertrains with the Skoda Superb. Production of the next-generation sedan and station wagon together with the same Superb will be established at Skoda’s new factory. The factory located in Emden (Germany), where the Passat was assembled for 36 years, is being converted to produce the ID.4 EV.

Another significant decision of the manufacturer is to abandon two different versions of the model. It is worth noting that now the European one is based on the MQB platform designed for front-wheel and all-wheel drive models. The Passat for China and the United States is assembled on the old PQ46, which appeared during the sixth generation of the model in 2005. The updated MQB platform will be unified for all markets with the release of the B9. Besides, it will be unified not only for electrifying petrol and diesel engines but also for using a fully electric transmission. Here's what's in store for the new Volkswagen Passat.
