Porsche Plans to Release a Low-Cost Sports Car

A new low-cost Porsche is a reincarnation of the 914 model produced in collaboration with Volkswagen in the 1970s.

Porsche Chief Designer Michael Mauer said that the company was «constantly debating» about the design of a cheap and technically simple sports car in the line-up, such as the Porsche 914 had been at one time.

In an official interview posted on Newsroom, Porsche detailed the history and design of the 1969 Porsche 914, recognizing it as the successor to the iconic 550 Spyder and describing it as a «typical Porsche» in terms of engineering.

Mauer, who had recently stepped down as Volkswagen AG Chief Designer to focus on Porsche’s projects, hinted that the latter is considering two alternatives for the ideological heir of the 914.

The first option is described as «a car that has almost no electronics, everything is mechanical and simple». The second, according to the designer, is «a car for the target group of people who choose the Audi TT RS or Golf R32s today».
