Nikola Presents an Electric Pickup to Compete with the Tesla Cybertruck

The standoff between the two American automakers is reaching a new level.

The Nikola Badger is still only a concept, but it is promised absolute superiority over the Cybertruck.

When Elon Musk presented his sensational Cybertruck, Nikola Motor did not miss the chance to laugh at its design and even invited a competitor to «share the design of a normal pickup.» An image of the car was added to the publication, a more detailed version of which we can now see. However, Musk unlikely needed a «normal» pickup truck: this would not make a splash and attract so much attention. Maybe it is Nikola that needs to take a few marketing lessons from Tesla.

Anyway, the Nikola Badger is presented to the world in the status of a concept; the production model is promised to be shown in September this year. Now, the manufacturer claims more than competitive characteristics for its new model.

The Badger features a combined-type powertrain: it is driven by electric motors that are powered by a 160-kW battery pack, or by a 120-kW hydrogen fuel cell unit. A full battery charge should be enough for 480 km, and hydrogen will double this figure. Thus, a drive range of the battery-hydrogen hybrid will be about 1,000 km.

A power output of the model’s electric motors in normal mode is 455 hp, and a maximum output during acceleration can reach 906 hp and 1300 Nm. This will provide the pickup with supercar dynamics: it will need less than 3 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 km/h.

The designers of the Nikola Badger say that priority was given not to its dynamics or drive range but to functionality. The model is able to tow a trailer weighing up to 3.6 tons, move up the hill with a 30-degree slope, even with a load. The pickup has a roomy open trunk and a five-seat interior.

Other features of Nikola Badger include the ability to use it as a power source, a kind of power bank for power tools, lighting fixtures, a compressor, and so on. To connect devices, the pickup has a socket through which it will produce up to 15 kW of energy, providing up to 12 hours of electrical equipment operation. In addition, it is stated that the Badger will not lose energy efficiency even at temperatures up to -30°C.

Production of the Nikola Badger is set to begin this fall. Prices have not yet been announced. At the time of its appearance on the market, there will already be a lot of rivals, not even counting the Tesla Cybertruck. They are the Rivian R1T, the Bollinger B2, the electric Ford F-150, and the revived Hummer.
