The Board of Directors of Renault has appointed Luca de Meo as CEO and Chairman of the company's management board from the first of July 2020. So far, the 52-year-old Italian cannot start performing his duties, as he is bound by the contract with the Volkswagen Group.

Luca de Meo, as stated in the official press release, “combines all the qualities that contribute to all aspects of the development and transformation of Groupe Renault”. There are high hopes for the marketing manager, because he led SEAT to record sales figures, improved the brand image and created the Cupra sports sub-brand. In addition, Luca will have to resolve the tensions in the group that reached a climax after the arrest of Carlos Ghosn.

Group Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said he was delighted with the new CEO, calling Luca a “great strategist” and a “visionary of the changing automotive world.” Nissan Chairman Makoto Uchida agreed with him: «I am very happy with de Meo's appointment. We look forward to working closely with him and our alliance partners.” The appointment is due to be confirmed at a general meeting of Renault shareholders in April, and there are no problems with formalities.

Luca de Meo started his career at Renault back in 1992 and was a leading marketing specialist for five years. Then he moved to Toyota, where he worked as a product manager. In the period from 2002 to 2009, he worked for FCA. After that, the top manager's resume was supplemented with significant achievements in VW Group and SEAT. Luca speaks Italian, English, French, German and Spanish, and has an understanding of the culture of France and Japan.

Until de Meo takes up his duties, this job will continue to be performed by Clotilde Delbos, who will become the deputy of the new chief.
