A 3D-Printed Lamborghini Aventador

Physicist Sterling Backus from Australia lives his simple life of a middle-class man and cannot afford to pamper his little son with expensive gifts. But he has a garage, tools and a desire to spend a good time with his son.

While playing Forza Horizon, his son liked to choose the Lamborghini Aventador. He asked his dad to buy such a car. But it cost about $350.000, so any other man would likely think that it had been a joke. The Australian also checked his piggy bank, scratched his head and figured out a way to please his son.

He bought a 3D printer with some other tools and set about making a replica of the supercar. All body panels, headlights, taillights, and interior elements were 3D-printed. Since the printer does not allow printing of large-sized parts, Sterling divided some panels into several smaller ones and then glued them with a methyl methacrylate adhesive. The 3D parts weren’t strong so Barkus decided to skin the parts in carbon fiber. Some parts such as side-view mirrors and steering wheel are original ones from a real Lamborghini.

The original Aventador has a carbon fiber chassis. The Australian version is built on a tubular steel frame, although the suspension design has been preserved. Instead of a 6.5-liter naturally-aspirated V12 engine and a fast sequential gearbox, the replica is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.7-liter V8 engine from a Corvette and a Porsche gearbox.

Sterling and his son worked on the project during their free time and spent about $20.000 dollars on it.
