Skoda Develops Application for Detecting Nature of Breakdown by Sound

Skoda is testing its recent development, the mobile app Sound Analyzer, which determines the nature of a breakdown in the car by sound.

So far, the system is able to detect about a dozen malfunctions with an accuracy of up to 90 percent. It is tested by 245 official dealerships in 14 countries.

The app works as follows: you need to run Sound Analyzer in close proximity to the sound source in the car; the noise will be recorded using the built-in microphone and then converted into a spectrogram that visually displays acoustic signals. Artificial Intelligence will compare them with the database of sound samples, and if matches are found, the system will notify the owner about the nature of the fault and the need to contact the service center.

Artificial Intelligence is already able to recognize 10 patterns with more than 90 percent accuracy, including problems with steering, semi-automatic transmission and climate control. The app is also configured to detect other sound patterns.

Skoda’s dealerships have been testing the app in various countries, including Germany, Austria and France, since June 2019.
