Tesla Patents New Steering Wheel

Tesla has patented an innovative steering wheel that combines automatic transmission control functions.

The American manufacturer intends to change the usual controls: bring the touch panel for selecting driving modes to the lower spoke of the steering wheel and replace the analog buttons with a touchpad.

The description of Tesla’s application in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) says that it is planned to place LED indicators for turning on parking, reverse, neutral or driving modes at the bottom of the steering wheel. This configuration will allow you to completely abandon the transmission selector.

Using scrollable touchpads will allow the driver to control the infotainment system, activate the autopilot, or enable voice recognition based on tactile sensations. Tesla believes that touch panels are more variable than “physical” buttons, so the driver will be able to intuitively adjust all the necessary parameters without taking his eyes off the road and his hands off the steering wheel.

If Tesla’s patent is used in mass-produced electric vehicles, then analog switches will become a curiosity: only the buttons of windscreen wipers, turn signals and horns will remain “physical”.
