The study, which took place from June to September 2020, involved 17 different semi-autonomous driving systems. The tests were conducted on a closed test site with an area of 1.32 sq km and nearby public roads in the United States. Consumer Reports conducted 36 separate tests for each system in five categories: capability and performance, driver engagement, ease of use, safety, and emergency response. According to the results, Tesla’s Autopilot lost to a similar system from Cadillac.

Cadillac's proprietary Super Cruise system was named the best overall: it won in three of the five categories — Tesla's Autopilot took the lead in the other two. The experts called Super Cruise the most balanced. A lot of different models took part in these tests: Tesla Model Y, Lincoln Corsair, Mazda CX-30, Range Rover Evoque, Hyundai Palisade, Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Passat, Porsche Taycan, Volvo S60, Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, Nissan Leaf, Toyota Corolla, BMW 330i, Buick Encore GX, Audi e-Tron, Cadillac CT6 and Lincoln Corsair.
