The Design of the New Mitsubishi SUV Is Leaked on the Internet

The new generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander will debut in the second half of this year.

Our colleagues shared all the known information about the future model and their thoughts on the car design.

Mitsubishi became part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 2016. A positive aspect is the reduction of costs for launching new models by using common platforms.

In particular, the new Outlander is expected to inherit the Renault-Nissan CMF-C/D platform, which is already used with the Nissan X-Trail and Renault Koleos, as well as with other Alliance models. The new car will be larger than its predecessor. The current model has dimensions (L/W/H) — 4695x1810x1710 mm.

But the model and interior designs of the car will be its own. Last year, Mitsubishi hinted at what the company's SUV would look like by showing the Engelberg concept at the Geneva International Motor Show.

The novelty will inherit the general style with muscular forms, tinted racks, a decorative insert on the rear rack that visually separates the roof line, C-shaped chrome-plated inserts on the front bumper and other decorative elements from the concept.

The interior will also contain many references to the concept's design, such as a large display of the multimedia system, as well as a separate touch screen for climate control. Due to the increase in size, the new car will become more spacious for occupants.

The novelty will traditionally have two variants of the interior configuration– 5- or 7-seat. The model is expected to include a set of ADAS: the MI-Pilot system, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, lane-keeping aid, torque-based grip control, as well as other useful electronic systems.

PHEV (a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle)

Although there is no exact confirmation of the entire line of powertrains, there is information about the PHEV. It will receive a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a power capacity of 128 hp (94 kW). In addition, the unit will have two electric motors producing 94 hp (69 kW) and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 13.8 kwhr. An all-electric driving range is up to 70 km.

The Outlander is expected to be available in some markets with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine from the Eclipse Cross. However, given the larger dimensions of the model, the engine power will be increased from 150 hp to about 170 hp. In addition, as part of cooperation with Nissan, the car may be equipped with powertrains from the X-Trail.

Who are the rivals?

The new Outlander will face serious competition in the SUV segment. Among them there are such successful models as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4, not to mention the «relatives» — the Nissan X-Trail and Renault Koleos.

Some experts believe that the new Outlander will make its debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, but Bernard Loire, the President of Mitsubishi Europe, said that the SUV will be presented in the second half of this year with a smaller SUV launching around the same time.
