The Electric Sedan by the Tesla Model S Designers Is Ready for 95 Percent

Three years have passed since the presentation of the Lucid Air, but there has been no information about it for a long time. However, it was recently announced that the EV is almost ready and will be launched at the end of 2020.

The startup from California, Lucid Motors, broke the long silence with good news: the Air electric sedan will be launched at the end of next year, and the deposit amount has been reduced.

Lucid Motors was founded 12 years ago under the name Atieva by the former VPs at Tesla, Bernard Tse and Peter Rawlinson (the chief engineer of the Tesla Model S), and the former Head of Design at Mazda's North America, Derek Jenkins.

In 2016, Lucid Motors introduced a luxury electric sedan under the name Air. Then the company held several events the following year, and disappeared from the media radar. The firm has now released revised plans on the Air.

Two years ago, the company planned to build a manufacturing complex in Arizona in order to start production in 2018. However, there was a delay and construction of the manufactory began only in November 2018, which pushes the start of full-scale production to 2021. At the same time, the first customers’ electric cars are promised to be delivered at the end of 2020. Lucid Motors is now assembling 80 cars designated as beta prototypes directly at its California HQs.

Lucid Motors states that the new electric car is currently 95% ready for mass production. The Lucid Air is similar in size to the Tesla Model S, but the manufacturer is trying to move away from comparisons with the today’s most popular electric car. It is claimed that the Air will become a worthy competitor for such models as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. They probably haven't heard of the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

The basic configuration of the EV will be rear-wheel drive and equipped with a 400-hp powertrain. The top-end configuration produces 1000 hp; it will be all-wheel drive and has a drive range of more than 640 km. The most affordable configuration is estimated at $60.000, the top-end configuration will cost more than $100.000.

The possibility to preorder the Lucid Air appeared a long time ago; customers deposited $ 2.500. Now the company has reduced the deposit amount to $1000. Lucid Motors offers its customers to return the difference, without losing a place in the queue.
