In the late 1970s, BMW signed a contract with Lamborghini, under which manufacturers were to develop sports cars. However, there was a conflict between the parties. And the Bavarian company decided to work on the project independently. This is how the one-of-a-kind production mid-engined BMW was born. The body was named ‘E26’, in the core of which there was a 3.5-liter 6-cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection by Kugelfischer.

The engine of the road variant had 6 separate throttle bodies, 4 valves per cylinder and a power output of 277 hp. A top speed was 260 km/h. The turbo racing versions were capable of producing about 850 hp. The standard model accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and from 0-200 km/h in 21.8 seconds. It could travel a quarter of a mile in 14.1 seconds.
