Toyota Is Preparing a Powerful SUV with a 1.6-Liter Turbo Engine

Toyota is going to boost the compact C-HR up to 268 hp.

No sooner had we got used to the furious Toyota GR Yaris, as the Japanese manufacturer decided to alarm manufacturers of powerful and compact SUVs. Toyota Gazoo Racing will soon release a high-performance version of the compact C-HR GR. The second generation of this model will be released in 2021. Since the powerful modification is promised to be launched by 2023, it will most likely be based on the next generation of the C-HR.

While Hyundai N is preparing a sports version of the Kona, Ford is working hard on the powerful Puma, and Volkswagen has already shown what their little T-Roc R is capable of, Toyota is not sitting idly by. With a 268-hp turbo 3-cylinder engine, the baby C-HR might «be able to fly into space.»

It is not surprising that this engine is used for other models of the manufacturer, because if it was intended only for the Yaris GR, its development would be absolutely stupid and unprofitable action. The C-HR GR will continue to be based on the Toyota TNGA, which should serve as a good base for a high-performance SUV, although with a small number of upgrades. Most likely, it will be equipped with a more rigid suspension, sports brakes and, of course, huge alloy wheels. There is only one question: whether this C-HR can withstand the pressure of the crazy 300-hp T-Roc R.
