Volkswagen Creates Robots for Charging Electric Cars

An autonomous robot with a battery will arrive at the user's call and connect itself to the electric car to recharge it.

It is expensive and time – consuming to build the infrastructure for charging stations. It is much more practical to produce charging robots, according to Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen concept assumes that every parking lot in the city can turn into a station where many cars can be charged at the same time. Thus, the German automaker is preparing for the time when electric transport will become widespread and the development of charging infrastructure will not keep up with the growth rate of the number of battery-powered vehicles.

The concept robot is equipped with a 25-kW battery pack, it is able to independently find an electric car in the parking lot and connect to its port. The mobile power bank can be called via the mobile app. If cars are equipped with the necessary software, they will be able to send messages about low battery, to which the robots will automatically respond.

The robot will have a set of sensors and scanners for orientation in space, like household cleaning robots. It will also recharge itself at the dock.
