The compact Tharu has got the e-Tharu version without an internal combustion engine.

The low-cost Volkswagen e-Tharu has been released in China. It is based on the model of the same name with a petrol engine. However, it is equipped with an electric motor and battery instead of a 1.4-liter turbo V4, transmission and fuel system. The electric version costs ¥29,000 ($4,385).

The Volkswagen Tharu debuted 2 years ago. However, now the model has been electrified in China.

There are a few Improvements in the exterior and interior: if you do not take into account the nameplates, you can only distinguish the EV by special “aerodynamic” wheel rims, the absence of decorative exhaust pipes in the rear bumper and a simplified front bumper with C-shaped daytime running lights.

The car is powered by a 136-hp (290 Nm) electric motor and a 44.1-kWh battery. A drive range in the mixed cycle is 315 km (NEDC). But if you drive along the highway evenly at the allowed speed, you can travel up to 400 km. Fast charging from 0-80 percent and up to 100 percent will take only 52 minutes and 6.5 hours, respectively.

Since the e-Tharu is a compromise electric vehicle based on a conventional platform, the battery has reduced the trunk space. There is no variation in the versions: only one electric motor, front-wheel drive and no alternative traction battery.

The price of the new budget EV is attractive: the richly equipped version of the e-Thru costs from ¥194,800 ($29,455). For comparison, a 150-hp petrol Tharu with a smaller set of options will cost at least ¥165,800 ($25,070).

The difference with Volkswagen EVs on a modular platform is even higher: the German company has already announced that comparable RWD ID.4 crossovers will cost at least ¥250,000 ($37,800).
