Volkswagen to Surprise the Whole World: What VW R Is Preparing

Volkswagen cars have always had powerful modifications, but their potential usually did not rise to unthinkable heights.

Yes, history has known such cars as, e.g. the iconic 175-hp Golf 3 VR6, the 280-hp Passat B5 with a W8 engine and 4Motion drive gear, and even the 6-liter Phaeton, which was far from the slowest car in its segment.

Do not forget about the entire GTI line-up, which, despite its inherent FWD drivetrain, has always provided amazing feelings during ordinary driving around the city and demonstrated great results on race tracks. You cannot ignore the R36 models either. However, despite all of the above, Volkswagen did not rise above a certain level. Audi’s and Porsche’s cars have always been at the peak of power and performance, there is nothing you can do about it. This is the conglomerate’s policy anyway.

However, Volkswagen always had an ace up its sleeve. The modest and technological Golf R hatchback, which replaced the R32 line-up, has been a real wolf in sheep's clothing in recent years. The seemingly unremarkable hatchback could easily compete with BMW M and Mercedes-Benz AMG, showing results no worse than its older siblings – the Audi RS. In 2020, when the entire community of the brand’s fans is holding its breath before the release of the new R model, the company's management decides that the Golf will no longer be alone, having sent a number of high-performance models to help it in the fierce struggle for recognition of motorists.

The T-Roc R SUV and the flagship Touareg R have already joined these ranks. In addition, we will witness the debut of the Tiguan R in the near future, and it should be followed by the Arteon R a little later. The new eight-gen Golf R will complete this top-five list. Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand Jürgen Stackmann said in a recent interview that the world will soon hear many amazing stories about the R models, suggesting that something extraordinary should come with the new models.

The Touareg R brought the first unconventional thing – a 456-hp hybrid powertrain. However, Stackmann noted that this is far from the end. He confirmed that future R models will be electric. «The future of R needs to be, and will be, electric,» he said. Now, with Volkswagen R’s chief Jost Capito swayed into accepting that electric cars are exactly what the company wants to do, electrified performance from Wolfsburg will not come as a surprise at all. Let's wait and see if they are as amazing as the company's executives see them.
