Hyundai Recalls Sonata and Nexo Cars Over the Problems with Smart Parking

Parking Assist installed in Korean cars can cause an accident.

Hyundai has released the new Remote Smart Parking Assistant (RSPA) feature for its 2020 Sonata. However, the system, that could have made any driver’s life easier, has become a threat due to a glitch in the software.

RSPA allows the car to park or leave a parking spot without the driver. That gives an opportunity to park the car in tight space, e.g. when it might be difficult for the driver to open the door. Smart Assist can also automatically park the car in reverse. To do this, the driver just needs to push the button.

Now let's move on to the heart of the problem. Due to a software glitch, it turned out that the car might not stop in time. As a result, the risk of collision with other cars or objects increases greatly. Therefore, the company decided to recall cars with installed RSPA. The electronic control unit can be reprogrammed in service centers.

At the moment, about 12.000 cars from the US have been recalled. It concerns not only the latest Sonata but also the Nexo Fuel Cell SUV. Of course, the car’ owners will not have to pay anything for the service.
