Acura Reveals New MDX

The MDX will become the most luxurious and technological SUV of the company.

Acura has shown what the fourth-generation MDX will look like. So far, only a prototype is officially declassified, but it is as close as possible to a production car. Since the Acura RLX abandoned, the all-terrain vehicle will take its place as a flagship model: this explains the manufacturer's desire to make it the most luxurious, technological and temperamental SUV in the history.

As expected, the Acura MDX has a new platform. This is the same platform as that of the new TLX. It has a front double wishbone suspension. The SUV has become lower and wider, and its wheelbase has added almost 76 mm (up to 2,896 mm).

Together with a new hood extended from dash-to-axle by 152 mm and a cab shifted to the rear end, all this makes the car look more dynamic.

The Acura MDX is shown in two colors in the photos: Liquid Carbon and Performance Red. The Acura MDX is shown in two colors in the photos: Liquid Carbon and Performance Red.

Meanwhile, the front end is still crowned with a 3D-patterned Diamond Pentagon grille. Four-element LED JewelEye headlights with a stroke of RDLs in the form of a chicane, like that of the prototype Acura ARX-05 prototype, have become narrower. There are new side air vents on the bumper with fog lights placed under them.

The rear has turned out to be less expressive, so the manufacturer only mentions taillights, the pattern of which repeats the “headlights graphics”. The wheel size is 21 inches.

The interior of the “fourth” Acura MDX has been transformed even more. It is similar in architecture to the TLX but with its own features. For example, the SUV is the first to receive a 12.3-inch fully digital Acura Precision Cockpit and a 12.3-inch infotainment system, which can be controlled from a touchpad on the center console.

Besides, the all-terrain vehicle is equipped with a 1,000-watt ELS Studio 3D Signature Edition system with 25 speakers (including six carbon fiber cone-shaped subwoofers) and an Iconic Drive background lighting unit with a choice of 27 available color schemes.

The interior features wood inserts with open pores and metal inclusions, polished aluminum and Milano leather with an adjusted front surface. The MDX will also get new sports seats with a more developed profile, 16 positions, 9 massage modes, “gradient perforation” and French double stitching, as well as a huge panoramic roof.

As for specifications, the expectations were only half met. The new MDX Type S will still get a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with direct injection, which develops 360 hp and 480 Nm, but a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 3.5 will remain standard.

The both units will be combined with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and the fourth generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) (an option for cars with V6). Brembo brakes with four-piston ivory calipers will be responsible for braking.

The new Acura MDX will be assembled at the East Liberty factory in Ohio, USA. The engines will be assembled at the Anna site, where hybrid powertrains for the NSX are produced. The standard SUV will be released in North American early next year, but the Type S version will only appear in the summer.
