Against All Electric Cars: an Israeli Startup Decides to Beat VW and Renault

We are already used to electric cars. Manufacturers of EVs, in turn, let their guard down. It is time to shake the segment up a bit and to offer something cool.

All automakers are switching to modular platforms because it is easier and cheaper. This applies primarily to electric vehicles, because their expensive design needs to be simplified. Israel-based REE has decided to become a leader in this direction.

At a time when VW has decided to create an entire electric lineup based on the derivatives of a single platform and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance holds a leading position in the European EV market, REE wants to go further.

Modular platforms that are already familiar today allow scaling components and creating hatchbacks, sedans, compact SUVs, and even compact minivans within the same architecture. However, the capabilities of such projects are still limited.

REE’s platform can be adapted even to the needs of cargo transportation. The idea of the so-called skateboard at the core of the platform is raised to the absolute here. The flat-type battery is located in the lowest part. The other key elements are installed in any available space, even in the wheel arches.

Everything is done in order to put together the parts as compactly as possible and give freedom to third-party manufacturers who will come up with an idea to design as they please.

The company has already shown a chassis adapted for the development of a compact car based on it. Japan-based Hino Motors has transformed the platform into a six-wheel base for the truck. Mitsubishi, Axle and Musashi have already decided to cooperate with the Israeli company.

This means that REE's activities deserve close attention. Their project still looks somewhat unfinished and seems inconvenient to maintain. But representatives of the company say that everything is very simple: for example, an electric motor can be replaced in just 18 minutes. We will be watching.
