Ford Says the Focus ST Is Much Better Than the Golf GTI

Who would have thought about it 10 years ago, but hot hatches are still popular. The rivalry is not waning, but the Ford Focus ST, according to some information, is simply the best.

The company came to this conclusion after some comparative tests of several competing models, including the Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai i30 N and the best-selling Volkswagen Golf GTI. Ford Performance Europe Chief Stefan Meunzinger stated in his interview with Motoring that they had managed to make «a much sharper, crisper vehicle than a Golf GTI».

The new Ford Focus ST is equipped with a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 280 hp and 420 Nm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. Regardless of the gearbox, the hot hatch is priced at $46,690.

For comparison, a Volkswagen Golf GTI with 245 hp (370 Nm) costs $46,690, a three-speed Hyundai i30 N Performance (275 hp, 353 Nm) – $40,990, a Honda Civic Type R (310 hp, 353nm) with a manual gearbox — $51,990.

The new Focus ST is not all-wheel drive, unlike the previous Ford Focus RS. However, it comes with a proper limited-slip differential (LSD). Its closest competitors with similar systems use the term e-diff. However, according to Meunzinger, “they are just doing it by torque vectoring via brake usage and that’s a very different approach”. The Focus has a very different system.

Stefan Meunzinger also said that the Focus ST’s LSD is

the most advanced slip control you can do on a front-drive car – [the] most expensive and most advanced.

He also noted that

it is a mechanical device that is electronically controlled. It has a clutch inside and it can be locked anywhere between zero and 100 per cent.
