The model is a repainted and somewhat modified analog of the Tharu, which has been sold in China for two years. At the same time, the Taos has an original front end design. According to the designers, the model was supposed to combine the features of other American Volkswagen SUVs, such as the Tiguan and the Atlas. As a result, the Taos has received new headlights, radiator grille and bumpers, and standard 17-inch wheels. 18- or 19-inch ones are available for expensive configurations.

The standard Taos will also receive a dual-zone climate control unit.

More expensive versions will receive a set of electronic assistants, including emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping system and adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go.
