The Beijing BJ90 SUV: Production of the Chinese ‘Mercedes’ Has Started

Visually, the new car is very similar to the Mercedes-Benz GL.

If you also look closely at the design of the SUV, you will notice something similar with a Mercedes. The donor car for the newly made Beijing BJ90 is the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GL, which has been turned into the first GLS after a facelift. Besides, it is not plagiarism. Everything is quite official, because BAIC and Daimler have a joint venture focused on the Chinese market.

Photos of prototypes of the new car appeared for the first time 5 years ago. Officially, the SUV was released in 2018. Despite this, the Chinese SUV never received the status of a production passenger car. In 2019, sales of the model were really bad – 258 cars. These were cars for official use. At the same time, the company worked under the model’s modification, after which BAIC finally announced the start of full-fledged sales.

Externally, the Beijing BJ90 has not changed much. The overall length of the SUV is 5,171 mm, width -1,995 mm, height – 1,902 mm, and wheelbase – 3,100 mm, what makes it comparable to the German donor car. Features of the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GL are also visible in the interior, although there are several differences.

Along with a borrowed steering wheel, dashboard, climate control unit and ignition switch, the SUV has received a number of unique solutions. These include a large infotainment system in the center of the front fascia, electric seat controls on the central tunnel, and only two rows of seats (Mercedes has three). Moreover, the second seat row is available in two versions: two separate seats with an armrest in the middle or a three-seat backseat.

The Beijing BJ90’s engine range includes a 3.0-liter 333-hp Twin-Turbo V6 of the M276 series and a 4.0-liter 422-hp V8. The two units come with a 9G-Tronic gearbox (9-speed, automatic) and an AWD system. The Chinese SUV has also inherited an air suspension with the ability to change a ground clearance.
