The New Chevrolet EV Will Compete Not Only for Car Buyers

It seems that motorists will not be able to save the segment of electric cars. But Chevrolet is preparing a clever move that will give the electric traction prospects.

The Chevrolet Bolt is the only modern EV from General Motors that deserves attention. However, even it does not seem so interesting from the point of view of today’s business. In the pursuit of profit, GM is looking for completely different buyers.

We are speaking about those who create statistics. Hundreds of purchases worth millions of dollars are made online every minute. So, all these numerous goods need to be delivered. Why not use electric vans? GM is working on this new product from Chevrolet at an accelerated pace.

We are used to watching the attempts of passenger electric vehicles to achieve commercial success. Stricter environmental requirements literally force manufacturers to create quite expensive EVs that enter the market and do not pay off at all.

It is quite a lottery for automakers every time. Will customers pay attention to the new product? How many times will they buy an electric model? Will this profit cover the development costs? As a rule, such cars do not bring money. But this does not mean that the idea of electric transport is so bad for the global auto industry.

Commercial orders are located on the opposite side from passenger cars. In this case, everything is very serious. Manufacturers cannot afford to play «guessing games» and create, for example, a delivery van in isolation from commercial projects. If a major company does not buy a new electric cargo car, the meager civilian sales will not make sense. Are there many people who want to buy an expensive van for family trips? Let it be a passenger car with all modern options that create comfort on the road, but this will make the vehicle even more expensive.

This is why we are only now noticing a trend for large commercial electric vehicles, due to the fact that large companies like Amazon, Walmart, Pepsi and postal services finance the development and conclude contracts for the supply of large quantities of EVs. For example, Amazon agreed with Rivian to supply 100,000 Prime electric vans for $4 billion. Let’s be honest, Rivian would not soon earn money on passenger pickups, which still need to be assembled somehow, without such a large order.

It is interesting that now this company has a partnership with the Ford conglomerate, which is also engaged in the development of a similar vehicle for large companies. We are talking about the electric Ford Transit. Another promising player in the accelerating market is Arrival, which also received a large order for its cars. By the way, Hyundai is now working with them.

Due to these facts, General Motors decided to step up. Contracts appear and are immediately closed one by one. But while this sector continues to grow, Chevrolet hopes to have time to occupy the niche. GM's commercial electric vehicle is expected to enter the market by the end of 2021.
