Legendary Racer’s Rare BMW Cabriolet to Be Put Under Hammer

There were three such cars in total.

A 1957 BMW 503, one of the three right-hand drive convertibles, will soon put up for sale at the British auction Bonhams. The rare model that belonged to the legendary British racer John Surtees will cost starting from £220,000-260,000.

John Surtees is the only driver in the world to have won a Formula One Grand Prix, as well as 500 CC motorcycle races. He became the champion of the “royal races” in 1964, participating for the Ferrari team. The sportsman won motorcycle races in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960, driving an MV Augusta.

The British driver purchased a BMW 503 in 1990 and owned the car until his death in 2017. In total, the Bavarian conglomerate produced about 400 similar models, 138 of which were convertibles and only 3 cars were equipped with right-hand drive.

According to the seller, the 63-year-old convertible is in almost perfect condition. The two-color car body has no signs of corrosion, and all technical units are working properly. In addition, the red leather interior looks excellent.

The rare BMW is powered by a 3.2-liter 142-hp V8. The unit is paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The convertible accelerates to 100 km/h in 13 seconds. A top speed is 190 km/h. According to the odometer, the car's mileage is about 113,000 km.
