Hot Rod in Style of "Mad Max" Put Up for Sale

A custom car based on the 93-year-old Essex costs almost $80,000.

An unusual lot has appeared on eBay: a six-wheeled rat-rod called the Radical Kiwi and based on the 1927 Essex. It is planned to sell the car for at least $79,980.

The exotic car, which resembles a vehicle in the style of “Mad Max”, was built by New Zealand-based Bellarat Customs, which specializes in creating hot-rods and rat-rods. The redesigned Essex was first unveiled at the SEMA in Las Vegas last year.

Every detail – of both the exterior and interior, as well as of the technical “filling” – has been carefully modified. Judging by the photo, the Radical Kiwi kept the doors, front end and round headlights from the 93-year-old donor car.

The body is expanded and lengthened. It is also covered with the special DNA Mutant Crystal paint, which gives it a shabby look in the style of a rat-rod. At the back, a kind of cargo platform was placed at an angle, on which you can install up to three bicycles or one motorcycle.

During the redesign, the car got a custom-made frame with thickened crossbars, a new suspension and a third axle with two additional wheels. It is powered by a 7.4-liter Chevrolet V8 unit with a Holley carburetor and custom intake manifolds. The engine is paired with a manual GM 70R4 transmission, a new driveshaft and a Jaguar differential.

The car has also got a steering wheel, brake calipers and chrome wheels from Jaguar. The interior is completely revised: the seats and doors were doused with brown leather; a new center panel and audio system were installed.

Earlier, another unusual hot-rod called the Porsche 356 RSR Outlaw, crossed from two models of the German brand, was put up for auction: a 1960 Porsche 356B T5 and a 1990 964 C2. The car was sold for $858,000, which is two and a half times the initial bid.
